Butternut Squash Bites

Last weekend, my lovely friend Jamie hosted a Friendsgiving feast, and encouraged us all to bring bite-sized treats. As someone who will be going to FOUR Thanksgiving events this November, I considered the mini suggestion a welcome break from the inevitable food coma of Friendsgivings. (Plus, I have to save my appetite for the big day!)

These might take you one or two bites, but they’re still tiny and adorable. And hey, also delicious as it turns out! I’ve been meaning to make Smitten Kitchen’s Butternut Squash Galette forever, so I figured this was the perfect time to tinker.

Buttered Popcorn Cookies

Popcorn Cookies

These might as well be called “Movie Cookies” because that’s precisely what they remind me of. I was searching for an interesting cookie to bring to a birthday party and was instantly inspired by Sift and Whisk’s adaptation Joy the Baker’s adaptation of a Smitten Kitchen recipe. Confused yet?

Ever since I first gleefully purchased The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, I’ve been looking for an excuse to make her Buttered Popcorn Chocolate Chip Cookies. Turns out I’m not the only one. When I stumbled upon Sift and Whisk’s malted milk ball adaptation, my choice was clear. For those of you who haven’t spent hours pouring over Smitten Kitchen’s long-awaited cookbook, these crunchy, tasty treats have copious amounts of buttered popcorn and malted milk ball bites sprinkled inside. They are salty. They are sweet. They are highly addictive. And they are here.

Homemade Ricotta

Homemade Ricotta

No, your eyes do not deceive you. I made my own ricotta. My very own cheese! The inspiration came a few weeks ago, when I found myself missing the recently closed Fraiche Restaurant in Santa Monica. Before I moved to West Hollywood and worked at an agency, I lived near the beach and spent many week nights at Fraiche’s happy hour. With inexpensive wine, balsamic glazed prosciutto pizza, and the best burger (yeah, I said it) in Los Angeles, Fraiche was by far one of my favorite spots on the West side. Even after I moved further East I tried to make it out there to enjoy the all night specials, and would even pay – gasp! – full price for their simply sweet orange beet salad.

As you may have guessed, the salad features a homemade ricotta. With Fraiche closing late last year, my mission was clear: I had to take the plunge and make my own!
