’90s Kids, ‘BSG’ Alumni & A New Freelance Gig

{1} I hated Dee on Battlestar Galactica. I’d shake my first whenever she found her way on screen, blamed her for all things Billy, and willed President Roslin to send her (and Gaeta) out the airlock nearly every episode. Luckily I can separate fiction from reality and recently had a chance to chat with Kandyse McClure, the oh-so adorable actress who played Dee. Check out our Buzzine Speed Date to see just how clever and cute McClure really is.

{2} Stop what you’re doing, hop onto whatever movie tickets website you use, and see if John Dies At The End is playing near you. Otherwise, take advantage of VOD and watch it from the comfort of your own home*. If you’re a fan of the strange and the macabre, the darkly funny and the deeply gory, this is a must-see.

{3} My little brother is about to turn thirteen, and I never feel quite as old and uncool as I do when I try to get him to talk to me. Even if it’s comic book movies or some game I read about, he manages to respond with such dripping sarcasm and disdain I realize that I’m growing up. Hello Giggles dives into this new generation gap with sage advice for the kids who played with pogs and moon shoes.

{4} On top of Buzzine and this brand new blog, I’ve got another new gig – and it’s not what you’d expect. Starting next week I’ll be contributing to Anime Vice, an encyclopedia of reviews, columns, videos and more, all about anime! What do I know about anime, you ask? Nothing! Tune in to read me figure it out, one tentacled robot at a time.

{5} Alexei and I kicked off our “Summer Midnight Movie Club” a bit early this year and saw Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters last night. After working on the Buzzine Video Interview with the cast and writer/director Tommy Wirkola, I was so excited to see this hot mess. Wirkola uses mostly practical effects, and that means one thing: an anamatronic troll. (Indiewire’s The Playlist review sums it up rather nicely.) If you like beheadings, absurdly terrible dialogue and vomit-inducing 3D, this is definitely the movie for you.

*Thanks, Andrea!
