Star Wars Day Admiral Ackbar Cupcakes

It’s no secret that I love Admiral Ackbar. When I was a little girl, weekends with my dad meant free reign over Blockbuster. I was allowed to rent 2-3 movies, and I’d spent the entire weekend eating take out and/or Kraft macaroni and cheese, holed up in my room watching weird/macabre/classic ’80s and ’90s kids movies on my little portable TV. From The Last Unicorn and Beetlejuice to The Labyrinth and the original Star Wars trilogy, I really liked dark and twisty movies — especially anything with a borderline-creepy puppet. So, obviously, I loved Admiral Ackbar.

That love has only grown over the past twenty-odd years of my life, and culminated in Alexei‘s 2012 Christmas gifts: the beginning of a beautiful Ackbar collection. Lego keychain? Got it. Talking plush toy? Also got it. Etsy watercolor painting? YOU BET.

I’ve mentioned that I’m not really a baker. I can sometimes finagle my way through a recipe, but I am usually shit when it comes to decorating. And even with this endeavor, which turned out surprisingly well, I nearly had a nervous breakdown when it got to the icing part. Luckily, I had Alexei to a) suggest mini Nilla wafers b) tell me to chill out, and eventually everything came together!

These cupcakes were 100% inspired (read: stolen) from the uber talented JustJenn. I used my trusty cinnamon cupcakes recipe, whipped up a simple cinnamon buttercream, and stuffed the cupcakes with Mexican chocolate pudding. I brought these little fellas to my friend Alex‘s Cinco de Mayo slash May the Fourth party. Amidst colored lightsaber taquitos, Wedge Antilles Wedge and Chilies (yep), and tons of delicious dips, Admiral Ackbar fit in just fine.

Did you do anything for May the Fourth? Sound off in the comments below!

WonderCon 2014

WonderCon 2014

Hello, friends! Yes, I’m still alive. Still, somehow, moving things out of my apartment, and still busier than I ever expected to be as a mere freelance writer. Last weekend I had the immense pleasure of attending my very first WonderCon for Nerdist, and boy, did I end up with a lot of loot.

I’ve done ComicCon before, but WonderCon is a nice little slice of ‘Con without all the chaos of heading down to San Diego. Throughout the weekend I attended panels (GARY OLDMAN YOU GUYS), perused the booths and artists’ alley, admired the incredible cosplay, interviewed some great people, and even ended up buying a few little knick-knacks, prints and gifts. (For more photos of the event, check out the galleries I shot for Static Beach.)

Saturday was deemed “the day Rachel fangirled herself to death” — I got to see exclusive WonderCon footage of the upcoming Godzilla film, sat only a few feet away from GARY LOVE-OF-MY-LIFE OLDMAN, and interviewed the cast of Bob’s Burgers. Keep an eye out for some of my upcoming WonderCon coverage for Nerdist here.

Moving Wishlist: Bedroom

(via Apartment Therapy)

There’s nothing quite like a move to send you on an emotional roller coaster. On the one hand, you’ve got to pack up your entire life, sort through all that extra junk you don’t need, and wrap endless kitchenware in newspaper. Even if you ultimately decide to hire movers, like I did, you can’t really escape the packing… not unless you want to trust someone to sort through your books, clothes, and Admiral Ackbar action figures, at least. Once you’re all moved in, you still have to go back to the old place and grab anything you’ve missed, and then… there’s the cleaning. Oh, the cleaning. I still haven’t gotten around to that yet, but it’s coming.

The exciting part about moving is, of course, the unpacking. The decorating. The endless pouring through magazines and their modern counterpart, Apartment Therapy, for ideas and inspiration. Though my new bedroom is currently a collection of boxes and bags, eventually it will be a new space just for me. In honor of that perfect, future set-up, here are a few of the things on my moving wishlist.

1. Luminous Dots Pillow 2. Round Captain’s Mirror 3. Between a Rock Lamp Base 4. Accordion Side Table

Although I’m definitely not the crafty sort, I will be attempting a few Ikea hacks this time around. Wish me luck!

InstaMonth: March ’14 / Announcements

March 2014

Gosh, it’s been a while. Sorry guys, but birthday and freelance took over my life for a few weeks there. It was a wonderful whirlwind filled with The Book of Mormon, LOTS of champagne, a Hollywood saloon, some awesome/nerdy presents from my friends (check out what Jamie made me!), and my very first set visit. I can’t tell you anything about it or the powers that be will have me killed, but let’s just say it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

Somehow it’s been forever since I’ve updated this ol’ thing, so I thought I’d get back in the swing of things with a few announcements…

#1: I’m moving! … four blocks away. After four years of living alone post-college, I’m moving in with my friend, Rhi. Hellooo, hardwood floors, A/C, and (more) movie nights! Goodbye, first “big girl” apartment. Thanks for all the memories.

#2: I’m also going to New York! If freelancing, work trips, and packing up my entire apartment weren’t stressful enough, I’m also taking a trip in the middle of all of it. Luckily, it’s all a good kind of stress. Follow me on Instagram if you want to see some of my NYC adventures.

#3: In the midst of all the birthday craziness, the Veronica Mars movie came out! On my actual birthday! I went to see it with friends on opening night, have rewatched my digital copy twice, and was able to do some fun coverage for Nerdist. Check it out:

#4: I’m covering pop culture, comedy and food for the recently relaunched Static Beach! Make sure you follow us on Twitter for all things beach.

#5: Lastly, a big resounding thank you to everyone who celebrated my birthday with me this year. 25 was a bit of a tough one, but ringing in 26 with such incredible, thoughtful people really lifted my spirits. I LOVE YOU ALL!

Cute of the Day: First Kiss

I wouldn’t normally click on something like this. With all the click-bait out there on UpWorthy, EliteDaily, etc. etc. etc., I tend to avoid links like this that inherently feel a little manipulated. I wouldn’t normally click on something like this, but I’m glad I did. It’s very cute. Maybe it’s because my anniversary is coming up, or maybe because I find spring sort of magical, or maybe it’s because this video is in black and white, or because it’s set to this beautiful song by Soko… or maybe it’s because I’m secretly A TOTAL SAP.

The video is called First Kiss, and it’s directed by Tatia Pllieva. Essentially it’s a bunch of really pretty strangers making out with each other, and the whole thing is pretty effective. Check it out:
